Desert Terrain Base with Vallejo Diorama FX
Want to give your dioramas or display bases a professional, realistic finish? 🌵
In this tutorial, we'll show you how to create a desert terrain base using Vallejo Diorama FX products, achieving natural textures, smooth transitions, and an arid effect that looks like it's straight out of the Tatooine desert.
The process, created by Javier Redondo, combines texture pastes, pigments, and washes to produce a believable and durable surface.
🛠️ Step 1: Preparing the Base
Start with a rectangular foam PVC base.
Glue small pebbles with PVA glue to build up a low wall and add volume.
Allow everything to dry thoroughly before applying any textures.

🏜️ Step 2: Main Texturing
Apply Desert Sand (26.217) across the entire terrain surface.
To create variation and depth, mix the same product with Light Brown Mud (26.810) and use this blend on the front section.
💡 Tip: vary the mixing ratios to create more natural-looking gradients.
🪸 Step 3: Adding Colour and Detail

In a small palette well, mix three stone shades of the same grain size:
-
Warm Orange (26.321)
-
Alkaline White (26.302)
-
Arid Yellow (26.314)
Hand-paint each stone individually using different ochre tones to break up any uniformity.
Then use a piece of sponge to blend the transitions between terrain colours, softening the changes.
🏖️ Step 4: Placing Rocks and Raised Features

Scatter rocks randomly across the base, particularly in the transition zones between different height levels.
Press them in gently so they sink into the still-wet paste — this creates a realistic sense of weight and natural embedding.
In certain areas, add larger rocks using Alkaline White (26.303) to enrich the overall composition.
🎨 Step 5: Tones and Colour Modulation

Once the surface is dry, apply different tones with an airbrush:
-
Model Air UK Light Stone (71.143)
-
Model Air White (71.001)
-
Model Air Beige (71.074)
Work wet-into-wet using Premium Color Retarder (62.065) to blend the tones more smoothly.
🌾 Step 6: Vegetation and Fixing
Place small bushes and dry grasses from Hobby Scenery at strategic points across the terrain.
Strengthen adhesion by applying a mix of Terrains Fixer (26.322) and Airbrush Thinner (71.161) via capillary action using a pipette.
💧 Step 7: Washes and Volume Definition
For a more realistic finish, apply washes with Wash FX across different areas:
-
Oily Ground (76.521) on rocks and crevices.
-
Light Grey (76.515) and Desert Dust (76.522) over flatter areas.
This will help define the volumes and blend the overall tones together.
