Common mistakes when printing with Elegoo resin (and how to avoid them) 🧪🚫

Most common printing errors with ELEGOO resin and how to fix them - Mr Resin

Resin printing is a wonder… until something goes wrong.

Layers that don't adhere, pieces stuck to the FEP, miniatures broken when removing supports, details that disappear, or prints that simply don't come out.

If you use Elegoo resin —one of the most popular on the market— you should know that most errors are not due to the resin itself, but to small incorrectly configured settings.

In this guide we are going to look at the most common errors when printing with Elegoo resin and, most importantly, how to fix them step by step.

1️⃣ The print doesn't adhere to the build plate (and gets stuck to the FEP)

This is the classic one.

You start printing, everything seems to be going well… and when you check, the piece is stuck to the bottom of the tank.

🔍 Why does it happen?

  • Initial exposure time too low.

  • Build plate poorly levelled.

  • Worn FEP.

  • Ambient temperature too low.

✅ How to avoid it

  • Increase the exposure time of the base layers.

  • Recalibrate the build plate levelling.

  • Check that the FEP is not scratched or loose.

  • Try printing between 20–25 °C.

This problem can occur with Standard resin as well as ABS-Like or Water-Washable resin.

2️⃣ The layers peel off mid-print

You have passed the first layers, but suddenly the piece splits or stops forming correctly.

🔍 Common causes

  • Poorly placed supports.

  • Badly oriented model.

  • Insufficient exposure time.

  • Resin too cold.

✅ Solution

  • Add more supports in critical areas.

  • Tilt the piece between 30° and 45°.

  • Slightly adjust the exposure time.

  • Make sure the resin is well mixed.

This is especially common when printing highly detailed miniatures with 8K resins.

3️⃣ The piece comes out brittle and breaks when touched

Many users blame the brand, but the problem is usually the type of resin chosen.

🔍 What's happening?

If you use a standard resin for functional parts, the piece will be rigid and brittle.

✅ Solution

If you need strength, switch to an ABS-Like V3.0.

It is more flexible, absorbs impacts better and handles stress better.

4️⃣ The surface comes out sticky after curing

This error is more common than it seems.

🔍 Reasons

  • Insufficient washing.

  • Dirty alcohol.

  • Insufficient curing.

  • Excess resin accumulated in details.

✅ How to avoid it

  • Change the alcohol regularly.

  • Wash for at least 2–3 minutes.

  • Make sure to dry completely before curing.

  • Cure for the recommended time based on size.

With water-washable resins this can also happen if not rinsed properly.

5️⃣ Excess lines or visible layers

If you see very pronounced lines or "banding", it's not always the resin's fault.

🔍 Possible causes

  • Dirty or poorly lubricated Z-axis.

  • Layer height set too high.

  • Vibrations in the 3D printer.

✅ Solution

  • Lubricate the Z-axis.

  • Reduce the layer height to 0.03–0.05 mm.

  • Check the machine's stability.

Elegoo 8K resins help minimize this effect thanks to their greater precision.

6️⃣ Bubbling or microbubbles in the print

This error is very common when the bottle is not shaken well.

🔍 Why it happens

  • Poorly mixed resin.

  • Low temperature.

  • Excessive shaking without resting.

✅ How to fix it

  • Shake the bottle well before use.

  • Let it rest for a few minutes before printing.

  • Filter the resin when returning it to the bottle.

7️⃣ Warping or deformations

If your piece curves or deforms:

🔍 Causes

  • Lack of support.

  • Unstable temperature.

  • Uneven post-curing.

✅ How to avoid it

  • Reinforce supports on flat areas.

  • Maintain a consistent temperature.

  • Cure all sides evenly.

ABS-Like resin tends to warp less than standard resin in functional parts.

8️⃣ Excessive odour during printing

Although Elegoo has improved formulations, resin is still a chemical material.

🔍 Causes

  • Poor ventilation.

  • Lid left open.

  • Tank left exposed for too long.

✅ Solution

  • Print in a well-ventilated space.

  • Use an activated carbon filter.

  • Consider the Water-Washable version (it tends to smell less).

9️⃣ Constant failures even when the settings are correct

If everything seems right but the print keeps failing:

Quick checklist:

  • Have you updated your slicer?

  • Is the LCD screen clean?

  • Is the FEP film taut?

  • Is the resin still within its use-by date?

  • Have you tried a different print profile?

Sometimes slightly adjusting the exposure time makes all the difference.

Is it a resin problem or a settings problem?

Here comes the uncomfortable truth:

In 90% of cases, the failure is not due to the resin, but to:

  • Poor calibration.

  • Poor orientation.

  • Incorrect settings.

  • Cold environment.

Elegoo is one of the most consistent brands on the market. If you are using the right resin for your project and the correct settings, the results should be excellent.

Conclusion: print better, not more times 🚀

Resin printing has a learning curve, but mastering these mistakes puts you a level above the rest.

Remember:

  • Miniatures → Standard or 8K.

  • Functional parts → ABS-Like.

  • Home environment → Water Washable.

And if something goes wrong, check your settings before blaming the brand.

At Mr Resin we work with Elegoo resins every day and we know that, when properly configured, they deliver spectacular results.
