3DXTech CarbonX ABS+CF: Carbon Fiber ABS Filament for Rigid Parts (750 g, 1.75 mm)

CarbonX ABS+CF is a premium ABS filament reinforced with 10% high-modulus carbon fiber, manufactured in the USA by 3DXTech. The carbon fiber dramatically increases stiffness: the TDS lists a tensile modulus of 5,210 MPa. This is my go-to filament for brackets, tooling fixtures, and structural parts that need to hold their shape without flexing. Available in black, 750 g, 1.75 mm. Requires a heated bed at 100–110 °C, an enclosed printer, and a hardened steel nozzle.

Key Specs

  • ABS with 10% high-modulus carbon fiber reinforcement.
  • Tensile modulus of 5,210 MPa and flexural modulus of 5,260 MPa (per TDS).
  • Acetone vapor smoothing compatible, according to 3DXTech.
  • Easier to print than most industrial-grade materials.
  • Nozzle temp: 220–240 °C | Bed temp: 100–110 °C | Enclosed chamber recommended.
  • Minimum 0.4 mm hardened steel nozzle and 0.25 mm layer height or above.

Can My Printer Handle It?

If you're already printing ABS in an enclosed printer, most likely yes. The main thing to check is your nozzle: 3DXTech requires a minimum 0.4 mm hardened steel nozzle. Carbon fiber will wear through a brass nozzle quickly. A heated chamber is also recommended, along with a bed temperature of 100–110 °C. In an open-frame printer, limit yourself to small parts only.

What Does Carbon Fiber ABS Offer Over Standard ABS?

Greater stiffness and better dimensional stability. The trade-off is reduced elongation: the TDS lists just 2% at break, meaning parts will snap rather than bend. If you need toughness or impact resistance, standard unfilled ABS or nylon is a better choice. For a deeper dive, check out our complete carbon fiber filament guide.

Printing Tips

  • Use a hardened steel nozzle, 0.4 mm or larger. 3DXTech is clear on this requirement.
  • Set layer height to 0.25 mm or above. TDS test specimens were printed at 230 °C, 110 °C bed, and 100% infill.
  • Dry for 4 hours at 80 °C before printing if the spool has been exposed to air. We carry filament dryers that will get the job done.
  • Keep the printer enclosed and reduce part cooling fan speed to prevent layer delamination.
  • If acetone vapor smoothing, use a sealed container and work in a well-ventilated area.

FAQs

What format does it come in?
1.75 mm diameter, 750 g spool, black. SKU ABS03CF200750BK00 as listed on 3dxtech.com (the '2' in the SKU does not indicate 2.85 mm).

How much carbon fiber does it contain?
10% high-modulus carbon fiber by weight, per 3DXTech.

Do I need a hardened nozzle?
Yes. 3DXTech recommends a minimum 0.4 mm hardened steel nozzle.

Do I need a heated enclosure?
3DXTech recommends one. A closed printer typically works well.

What temperature can it handle?
HDT of 76 °C at 0.45 MPa and a Tg of 105 °C per the TDS.

Can it be smoothed with acetone?
Yes, 3DXTech states it is compatible with acetone vapor smoothing.

Is it conductive or ESD-safe?
No. The TDS lists a surface resistance of over 10⁹ Ω/sq.

Why is it so stiff yet brittle?
The fiber reinforcement raises the modulus to 5,210 MPa but limits elongation at break to 2%, per the TDS.
