Frequently Asked Questions
What is normal exposure time in resin 3D printing?
The normal exposure time is the number of seconds the UV screen illuminates each layer during printing. On current monochrome printers, this is typically 2–4 s for standard resins. Too short → weak or delaminating layers. Too long → loss of detail and difficulty releasing from the FEP. Use the calculator above to find the recommended value for your specific resin.
Why do print settings vary between printer models?
Because UV power, screen resolution, and release film type (FEP, nFEP, PFA) vary between models. An Elegoo Saturn 4 Ultra requires different parameters than a Mars 4 even when using the same resin. Always select your exact printer model in the search tool to get the correct values.
What's the difference between base exposure and normal exposure?
The bottom exposure only applies to the first 4–8 layers and typically ranges from 25–60 seconds to ensure proper adhesion to the build plate. Normal exposure applies to all remaining layers and is much shorter. Mixing them up is one of the most common beginner mistakes: using 35 seconds for every layer will destroy fine detail.
What lift speed should I use?
The lift speed controls how fast the build plate rises after each exposure. For standard resins, 60–120 mm/min is the recommended range. With flexible or high-viscosity resins, dropping to 40–60 mm/min helps prevent support failures during peeling. Printers with PFA film FEP (such as Elegoo's Ultra series) can handle higher lift speeds, as the low-adhesion surface significantly reduces peel forces.
How does temperature affect resin settings?
Below 20 °C, resin becomes more viscous and may require up to 20–30% longer exposure times and slower lift speeds. Above 28 °C, you can often get away with slightly shorter exposure times. The ideal range is 22–28 °C. If you're printing in a cold space during winter, pre-warm your resin (in a water bath at 40–50 °C for 10 minutes) before pouring it into the vat.
