Vallejo Diorama FX: realism made easy

Realistic scenery without the hassle

The Vallejo Diorama FX range is made for modellers who want extra realism without making life complicated. It's a set of ready-to-use acrylic pastes for mud, snow, water, earth, sand, waves, puddles and much more. Whether you're building a historical diorama or a fantasy scene, Diorama FX gives you the right materials to add texture, volume and life to your work.

They're very easy to apply: no smell, nothing toxic, no hazardous mixing. Everything is acrylic-based, so you can work indoors, clean up with water and forget about gloves and masks. They also stick well to primed surfaces, dry quickly and work with other Vallejo ranges such as Model Color, Weathering Effects or Xpress Color.

Earth, mud and sand textures for any terrain

For natural ground, Diorama FX has a full range of muds, sands and earths in different colours and grain sizes. From wet industrial mud to dry desert sand, you can recreate any climate or biome.

These pastes dry with realistic volume and texture, don't crack and can be painted over without problems. Apply them with a palette knife or an old brush to build roads, trenches or tracks with footprints. Add powder pigments for tonal variation and a more natural look.

Pair them with Model Color to paint rocks, edges and transitions.

Snow effects: quick, easy and realistic

Vallejo's snow effect is very easy to work with. It's ready to use, goes on as a light paste and dries bright white with a slight sparkle, just like fresh snow.

You can apply it directly to the base or over other textures. For more volume, just add more layers. You can also mix it with white or grey paint for dirty ice or melting patches.

Add Weathering Effects such as damp or mud for contrast.

Water, puddles and waves that look real

Diorama FX lets you recreate water in all its forms. Gels like Transparent Water or Mediterranean Water let you make anything from shallow puddles to sea waves.

The gel is self-levelling and can be poured straight into the scene. Shape it with a palette knife to suggest movement and add foam with white paint or special textures.

Combine it with pigments to adjust the colour and add dirt or algae.

Diorama FX: the finishing touch

Detail is what makes a scene believable, and that's where Diorama FX earns its place. With these textures a plain base becomes a story: footprints along a track, snow that looks cold, water that seems to move.

If you like your figures to look alive and full of character, this range is worth having on the bench. Your bases will stand out.

Tips from the Mr Resin workshop

Prime the base first with Vallejo primers for better adhesion.
Use stiff brushes or palette knives to apply and shape the terrain.
You can mix Diorama FX products together or with acrylic paint to change the colour.
With thick layers, let each one dry properly before the next (about 24 h).
Once dry, the effects can be painted, varnished or weathered.

Combine Diorama FX with other Vallejo ranges

Diorama FX works well on its own, but the results really stand out when you combine it with other ranges:

Model Color to paint raised areas, rocks and dry textures.
Weathering Effects to add rust, moss or damp.
Xpress Color for quick glazes.
Powder pigments for natural finishes.

Vallejo Diorama FX FAQ

Diorama FX covers acrylic textures for ground (several types of mud, plus earths and sands in different colours and grain sizes), snow effects, and clear or tinted water effects, plus extras like foam paste for waves. Altogether, it gives you what you need to recreate mud, dust, sand, snow, water, waves and other natural elements in your dioramas.

Both are used in scale modelling, but Diorama FX is for building the ground and base of the scene, adding volume and texture: mud, earth, water, snow. Vallejo Weathering Effects are thinner liquids and pastes with permanent pigments for weathering and environmental effects (oil stains, rust, rain marks, mud splatter and so on) on models and surfaces. In short: Diorama FX builds the scene and Weathering Effects adds wear and weather. They complement each other and are both water-based, so you can use them together.

It depends on the product and the thickness. In general, ground textures (mud, sand, snow) are touch-dry in about 1 hour in a thin layer, and in around 12 hours in a thick layer (2-3 mm). For a full, hard cure, leave very thick applications for 24 hours. Water effects (clear resin pours) form a skin in 1-2 hours, but layers several millimetres deep can take 24 hours or more to turn fully clear. Don't rush thick layers; patience keeps the effect clear and crack-free. If you're in a hurry, gentle heat (a hairdryer on warm) speeds things up a little, but ideally let it dry at room temperature. Once dry, the material is solid but slightly flexible and no longer dissolves in water.

No, Diorama FX products are ready to use straight from the pot. Don't thin them with water: it can make the paste too runny and slow down drying. Just stir the contents well with a stick or palette knife before use, especially if the pot has been stored for a while, as some components can settle over time. Then apply it as it is. With the water gels, pour them straight in and don't mix them with water, as that can make them cloudy. If you like, you can tint the pastes or gels with a few drops of Vallejo acrylic paint while stirring, but it's optional. In general, use it as it comes and spread it how you want.

These textures stick well to most surfaces used in modelling: plastics (polystyrene, resin), polyurethane foam or expanded polystyrene (diorama foam), card, wood, primed metal and so on. If the surface is very smooth or non-porous (hard plastic, for example), prime it or basecoat it first so the paste grips better. On porous surfaces (foam, wood) you can apply it directly, although priming first also stops the product soaking in too much. As it contains no solvents, it won't damage delicate materials: you can texture extruded foam without it melting, unlike solvent-based products. Always make sure the surface is dry and free of dust and grease.
