What is Vallejo Game Color and why use it?

Game Color is a water-based, non-toxic, low-odour acrylic range made for long sessions and consistent results. It keeps the classic dropper bottle so you don't waste paint, now in rPET (recycled and recyclable). Its strong point is balanced opacity: it covers quickly without hiding fine detail, which matters on 28–35 mm miniatures, busts and terrain.

Game Color formula: coverage, flow and a true matt finish

The pigment load and acrylic binder in Game Color are balanced to give good coverage without clogging detail. One or two thin coats give an even result, and the true matt finish avoids shine that flattens the volumes, especially in photos and competitive play.

The BSL system (Base, Shadow, Light): faster, more consistent painting

The BSL system is one of the main reasons Vallejo Game Color fits so well with the way people paint minis today. For each colour family you get the three paints you need:

  • Base: a mid tone with high opacity to lay down the main colour.
  • Shadow: a darker version for believable shadows without draining the colour.
  • Light: a lighter version for highlights and edges without harsh jumps.

How to use it

  1. Basecoat the main colour.
  2. Shade with the Shadow (glazes, filters or pin washes, depending on the texture).
  3. Highlight with the Light (thin layers, edge highlights, stippling on textured areas).

Sub-ranges that make a difference: Metallic, Inks, Washes, Fluo and Special FX

Game Color isn't only flat colours. The range has sub-ranges for advanced effects and eye-catching finishes that don't make painting any harder.

Metallic Fine metallics with good coverage, for hybrid NMM or classic TMM. Great on armour, weapons and mechanical parts. They behave well in thin layers, and you can tint them with inks to shift the temperature (cold steel, warm bronze, deep gold).

Inks Concentrated, translucent and highly saturated. Use them to deepen shadows, push a colour or add mood glazes (OSL, energy, magic). Mixed with medium they make very controllable filters.

Washes Made to pick out detail without staining flat surfaces too much. Perfect for panel lines and recesses in skin, leather, hair, cloth folds and organic textures.

Fluorescent Maximum impact for OSL, energy sources, runes, poison or magic effects. They work best over light or white basecoats. Seal them with varnish to keep them bright.

Special FX Creative effects: fresh or dried blood, slime, rust, grime, verdigris… Quick ways to dress up bases and tell a story without complicated techniques.

Brush and airbrush: fitting Game Color into your workflow

With a brush Use the paint straight from the bottle for basecoats, and add a few drops of water or medium for highlights and shading. For fine edge highlights, thin it slightly and wipe most of the paint off the brush.

With an airbrush Game Color can be airbrushed if you thin it a little with Airbrush Thinner or Flow Improver. At low pressure (15–18 PSI), make the mix runnier for smooth transitions. If speed matters more, use Game Air for basecoats, zenithal highlights and filters, then go back to the brush for the final details.

  • Vallejo primers: better grip and truer colour from the first coat.
  • Vallejo varnishes: protect your work (matt for realism, satin or gloss for metals and magic effects).
  • Xpress Color: quick sketches or one-coat shading, then refine with Game Color.

Tip: always finish with a protective varnish if the minis are going to be played with and carried around.

Building your palette: triads, sets and smart additions

If you're starting out

  • Pick 2–3 BSL triads for skin, main cloth and leather. That covers 80% of an army.
  • Add one cool metallic (steel) and one warm (gold/bronze) for variety.
  • Add a neutral wash to define the detail quickly.

If you're moving up to tabletop+

  • Add Inks to deepen shadows and Fluorescents for focal points.
  • Bring in Special FX for blood and grime on assault units.
  • Use satin varnish selectively on metals to make them stand out.

If you paint display pieces or busts

  • Work glazes with Inks and mediums for subtle variations.
  • Build atmosphere on bases with pigments and effects (combine with the Diorama FX range).
