SHINING 3D Einstar Vega: The PC-Free 3D Scanner

The SHINING 3D Einstar Vega is a standalone handheld 3D scanner that scans, processes, and exports without a PC — featuring a 6.4-inch 2K OLED touchscreen, 32 GB of RAM, and a built-in 512 GB SSD. It offers two infrared scanning modes: HD with a point distance as fine as 0.05 mm, and Fast with a range up to 1.5 m, plus 48 MP color capture.

It's made for anyone who needs to scan on location — in the workshop, outdoors, or while traveling — without lugging around a powerful laptop. What sets it apart is how intuitive it is to use: it works almost like a smartphone. Just watch the screen, move around your subject, and walk away with a finished STL. It uses structured light rather than laser, so it's best suited for people, vehicles, statues, and medium-to-large objects.

Key Features

  • No PC required: Powered by an 8-core 2.4 GHz CPU, 32 GB of RAM, and a 512 GB SSD — all built in.
  • Two infrared scanning modes: HD mode with MEMS projector for fine detail, and Fast mode with VCSEL projector for large objects.
  • 48 MP color capture for highly accurate texture reproduction.
  • Outdoor-ready: Works in direct sunlight and in low-light conditions, according to SHINING 3D.
  • Wireless sharing: Wi-Fi 6, SHINING 3D Cloud upload (5 GB free), and wireless screen mirroring.

What Can You Use It For?

  • Cars and motorcycles: Scan body panels or full bikes to design fairings, brackets, and custom accessories.
  • People: Portraits, busts, and full-figure scans for 3D printing — no laptop needed on set.
  • Heritage and outdoor scanning: Architectural details, statues, and museum pieces.
  • Small objects: HD mode captures fine surface detail on coins, carvings, and decorative parts.
  • Product visualization and 3D content: True-color 3D models for catalogs, AR applications, or social media.
  • Reverse engineering: Take measurements directly on the device and export to STL for redesign and printing.

The Technology, Straight Up

The Vega uses infrared structured light in two ways. HD mode uses a MEMS projector, works at a range of 100–350 mm, and captures at up to 15 fps — ideal for small, detailed parts. Fast mode uses a VCSEL projector, covers 270–1500 mm, and runs at up to 20 fps for quickly scanning large objects. Alignment options include geometry, texture, markers, or a combination. It supports 12 mm markers, which — according to SHINING 3D — cover the same area with 40% fewer markers than 6 mm ones.

The onboard software includes backtracking to fix misalignment during a scan, automatic table and floor removal, one-click mesh processing, coordinate system adjustment, and built-in measurement tools. For more advanced mesh editing, you can transfer the scan to a PC and continue working in StarVision.

From Scan to Printer

  1. Calibrate using the included calibration board and choose HD or Fast mode depending on object size.
  2. Scan while watching the screen — if tracking is lost, simply rewind and keep going.
  3. Process your scan in one tap directly on the Vega, or transfer the data to StarVision on your computer.
  4. Export as STL and send it to your PC via Wi-Fi, cloud, or USB-C.
  5. Print on a resin 3D printer with our resins for fine detail, or use filament for larger parts. Or send it straight to our custom 3D printing service.

Which One to Choose? Vega vs. Other Scanners

  • If you want a standalone scanner with laser capability for metal and shiny parts: EinScan Rigil Lite, or the Rigil Lite 32 GB for large-scale projects.
  • If you already have a powerful PC and need blue laser for small dark objects: Einstar 2.
  • If you want marker-free laser scanning for technical parts with a PC workflow: Einstar Rockit.
  • If your phone is all you need as a display for figures, cosplay, and people: Creality Otter Lite, also infrared.
  • If you mostly scan small objects on a desktop, wired: Creality CR-Scan Otter.
  • If you want blue laser for mechanical parts and a wired setup works for you: Creality CR-Scan Raptor.
  • If you need published volumetric accuracy for inspection tasks: Creality RaptorX.

Browse all options at 3D scanners. If you regularly scan small metal or chrome parts, the Vega isn't the right 3D scanner for you — a laser model will serve you much better.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the Einstar Vega worth it?

Yes — if you want to scan away from your computer or don't have a powerful PC. It handles all processing on-device and delivers a finished STL right out of the box. It's not the best choice if you mainly scan small shiny metal parts, since it lacks a laser; for that, the Einstar 2 or Rigil Lite will perform better.

Vega or Rigil Lite?

Go with the Vega if infrared scanning is enough for people, vehicles, and medium-sized objects. Choose the Rigil Lite if you also need blue laser for metal, black surfaces, and fine detail, along with marker-free laser alignment. Both are standalone with a 6.4-inch display; the Rigil Lite is heavier (870 g vs. 535 g) and also exports in 3MF.

Does it work without a computer?

Yes — that's the whole point. The Vega scans and processes data entirely on the device itself, powered by an 8-core CPU and 32 GB of RAM. You only need a PC if you want to refine the mesh further using StarVision, which SHINING 3D recommends running on an Intel i7 with 32 GB of RAM.

Can I scan objects and then 3D print them?

Absolutely. It exports in STL, which any slicer can open, as well as OBJ, PLY, and ASC. There's no 3MF export, but you won't miss it for printing. If the part needs to fit with another component, run it through CAD before sending it to your resin or FDM printer.

Does it need scanning spray for black or shiny objects?

Sometimes. SHINING 3D doesn't promise spray-free scanning for the Vega the way it does for its laser models. Infrared has a harder time with dark or reflective surfaces than blue laser, and if a part isn't scanning well, a evaporable scanning spray will solve the problem. If you scan a lot of metal or chrome, go for a laser model instead.

Does it work with Mac?

No computer is needed for scanning at all. If you want to transfer data to your computer, StarVision is available for macOS — SHINING 3D recommends macOS 11.0 on an Apple Silicon Mac. It also runs on 64-bit Windows 10 and 11.

How accurate is the Einstar Vega?

SHINING 3D doesn't publish volumetric accuracy figures for the Vega. What they do specify is point distance: 0.05 to 3 mm in HD mode and 0.5 to 10 mm in Fast mode. That's more than enough for scan-to-print workflows, but if you need precision quality control with tight tolerances, this isn't the right tool.

Can I scan people?

Yes, that's one of its main uses. It uses infrared — not laser — and you hold it like a smartphone while watching the results on screen in real time. Fast mode covers up to 1.5 m, so you can capture a full body without getting too close. For portraits and busts, the 48 MP color makes a real difference.

How long does the battery last?

Between 1.5 and 2 hours of continuous use, according to SHINING 3D. The built-in 5000 mAh battery is non-removable, but you can extend your session by plugging in a power bank and recharge it quickly at 65 W. If you're planning long scanning sessions away from an outlet, a power bank is a must.

What's included in the box?

Scanner, carrying case, calibration board, stand, power adapter, cable, wrist strap screw ring, 3 mm and 6 mm markers, quick start guide, and SHINING 3D's mascot figure. No computer required — everything you need to start scanning right out of the box.
